Elephants. Violins. Butterflies. These are only some of the exquisite figure pieces you'll find in a J.C. Ayer puzzle. Figure pieces -- also called silhouette pieces -- are the hallmark of Ayer puzzles. Most are single pieces, but some consist of as many as a dozen. The Salem witch, for example, appears only after putting together several intricate pieces. A puzzle within a puzzle, so to speak.
Jim Ayer's secret to cutting such detailed figure pieces is his water-jet cutting machine, which enables him to make more exact cuts than with a traditional jigsaw. These intricate silhouettes are cut from Baltic birch and the African hardwood okoume, adding durability and strength to your puzzle for generations of enjoyment.
Figure pieces also add interest to puzzles, and Ayer puzzles contain more silhouettes than other manufacturers -- about two or three per square inch. Puzzles of difficult images such as the Debre Berhan Selassi chapel ceiling in Ethiopia, have the most figure pieces. As with all Ayer puzzles, every piece interlocks so that the puzzle may be lifted by the edges and gently shaken.
