The family was thrilled with the resulting portrait. “It came out fabulous,” Susan said. “It’s amazing that Barry could get that many separate images merged together so well. People who see the portrait can’t tell it wasn’t shot in one sitting all together.”

Thanks to Barry and Jim’s creativity, families can create a keepsake puzzle featuring a photograph of their virtual family gathering, without the travel, expense—and family feuds! The process is simple:

1. Decide how many people will be in the completed family portrait.
2. Each family member or family unit visits their local photo studio to have their portrait taken, and delivers the resulting digital files (300 dpi) or negatives to J. C. Ayer & Company.
3. Once we receive all of the photos, we have Barry work his magic, putting the family together into one image as if they were in the same room and laminating the image on hardwood.
4. Jim then cuts it into intricate puzzle shapes using his unique water jet cutting machine.
