Moonlight View of Venice Makes for Intriguing Puzzle

When Jim was starting his business back in 1986, he had the good fortune of encountering gallery owner Jeffrey Brown of Brown-Corbin Fine Art. “He has a very good eye for paintings and also happens to be an excellent photographer,” Jim said. Jeffrey shot an exquisite reproduction of the John Leslie Breck painting “Venice” for Jim to create a standard puzzle.

An early adopter of impressionism, Breck enjoyed painting by moonlight. He carried this moonlight theme with him to Venice in the 1890s, where he also painted “Santa Maria della Salute by Moonlight”.

The artist grew up in the Boston area, and became one of the original settlers of the impressionist art colony in Giverny, France. There, he became romantically involved with Monet’s stepdaughter, Blanche Hoschede-Monet. But alas, happiness was not to be, and Breck returned to Massachusetts, where he spent the remainder of his life painting along the Massachusetts coast.

His work influenced the impressionist movement that occurred in the Boston area in the late 1890s. Critics of the time said Breck’s distinctive style marked a turning point in the art world.

Art fans can enjoy this fascinating painting in a standard 13 1/4 x 10 3/4” puzzle for $245. Visit our puzzle gallery to see more beautiful art puzzles.
