Turning Good to Grand: Digital Photo Enhancement

Frequently Asked Questions Creating Custom Photo Puzzles

Many of our customers are curious about how to make the most of the pictures they send us to craft custom puzzles. Thanks to Barry Kaplan at TFI Photo, we've been able to answer many commonly asked questions about turning photos into puzzles.

Are there certain types of images that make better puzzles than others?

Light colors are more attractive because they show the puzzle cut lines less than dark colors. Also, avoid large areas of one color. Example: A picture of a sailboat on the horizon with water below and a cloudless sky above would not be desirable. That kind of picture would be improved by making the puzzle an ellipse, cutting out the featureless sky and water. The standard puzzle Summer Pleasures was designed that way.

I'd like to create a puzzle from a digital picture. What format types do you accept?

You can send us digital photos in. TIFF, .PSD (PhotoShop), or JPEG format. They should be 250 DPI (dots per inch) at the actual size desired. For example, if you're ordering an 11x14" puzzle, the image submitted should be 250 DPI at 11x14".

How do I adjust the size of a photo when taking a digital picture?

When using a digital camera, or scanning photos for puzzles, keep in mind what size prints you hope to make later from the files you're making. For example, if you shoot with your camera set to a medium file size so that you can fit more pictures on the disk, you may find that an 8x10" photo becomes pixellated or fuzzy due to lack of resolution.
