Berio Gizzi likes to juxtapose a variety of images in his paintings. "The Stairway" includes a rendering of a Van Eyke painting, one of Gizzi's own landscapes, a photograph of his daughter, and a porcelain doll that can be seen in five other paintings in a series. The painting was done in oil on masonite. Mr. Gizzi was born in Abruzzi, Italy, and studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy.
